Keith Douglas Sweat was born on the 22nd of July 1961, in the New York City borough of Harlem to parents Juanita Thompson and Charles Sweat. His father used to work in the factory while his mother was a hairdresser. Sweat was raised by his mother Juanita alongside four siblings after his father died in 1973. To help the family, Keith began working as a night stock boy at Macy’s Department Store, and at the same time, he was attending City College. At the same time in 1975, he started spending his weekends playing with a Harlem band named, Jamilah.
